We are seeking dedicated volunteers to help us provide a library service to members of the public in the community of Taibach and its surrounding areas.
You will report to the Library Coordinator.
Responsibilities and required skills:
General responsibilities
- Locking and unlocking the library after/prior to volunteering.
- Answering queries from customers using the telephone.
- Assisting customers when using the photocopier.
- Monitoring the usage of the public access computers.
- Maintaining a clean and safe environment for all library users. A cleaning rota is in place and must be adhered to at all times. Cleaning consists of dusting, wiping, vacuuming, mopping and the taking out of rubbish.
- Operating the till, counting money accurately and with precision.
- Ensuring the smooth-running of library activities and groups, including children’s activity clubs.
- Preparing craft supplies prior to children’s craft time activities.
- You must be willing to follow directions and interact with other volunteers and customers in a positive manner.
- Availability to cover shifts to meet the needs of the library (e.g. volunteer sickness, holidays and seasonal demand).
Processing of library loans via the computer
- Basic computer skills are required for issuing, returning, processing, searching and requesting of books using the library management system.
- Telephoning customers to notify them of the arrival of requested books.
- You will need to have the ability to lift and bend when taking materials out of boxes.
Shelving books
- Library material must be sanitised, sorted, organised and shelved according to the Dewey Decimal classification system (alphabetical and numerical). Shelf areas must be kept clean and organized.
- Volunteers must have good organisational skills and the ability to learn the Dewey Decimal classification system.
- You must be able to stand, reach, lift, squat, bend, and stretch when shelving materials.
- When shelving materials on top shelves it may be necessary to use a step stool.
